Durian. Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR) finally has approved a long-awaited law on Sexual Violent Crimes on Tuesday, welcomed by many Indonesians.
Leading by the Speaker of the House Puan Maharani, attendees of DPR’s plenary session on Tuesday welcomed the law. In the previous process, only Islamic-based party the Prosperous Justice (PKS) rejected the draft of the law.
The new law regulates a series of sexual crimes such as sexual harassment both in form of physical and non-physical acts, force marriage, sexual violent in electronic platforms, sexual torture, sexual exploitation and sexual slavery.
It also regulates that law enforcers cannot refuse any sexual crime report and justice restoration principle can’t be applied as well to provide protection to sexual crime victim and to ensure that their right to get justice can be fulfilled.
Civil society groups welcomed the new law, which becomes a new breakthrough for Indonesia to protect its citizens from sexual crimes.
