Shanxi - A gas explosion took place at a coal mine in Shanxi, China on Friday, 22 May 2026 evening hours, causing at least 90 workers have died as of Saturday, 23 May 2026 afternoon.

When the gas explosion occurred at Liushenyu coal mine in Shanxi Province in norther China, 247 miners were working at the 300-meter underground mine.


On early Saturday morning 157 workers surfaced, and 90 others were still trapped in the pit.

Total 755 rescuers have been deploying to find and rescue miners. There are 123 are treated at hospitals.



As of 2pm local time on Saturday, the death toll rose to 90 and nine miners are still missing.

Governments and state leaders, including Japan Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have conveyed their sadness regarding the deadly incident.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation.***
