Jakarta — Indonesia will raise fees for several citizenship services starting on 1 August 2026, including a fivefold increase in the cost of applying to renounce Indonesian citizenship through the president, to 5 million rupiah (US$280) from 1 million rupiah, under a new government regulation on non-tax state revenue, applied by the Ministry of Law.
The changes, set out in Government Regulation No. 30 of 2026, replace fee rules that had remained unchanged for a decade under Government Regulation No. 45 of 2024. President Prabowo Subianto signed the regulation on 2 July 2026, and it takes effect 30 days later.
Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas said the fee adjustments were meant to fund service improvements and digital transformation, not to generate additional state revenue.
"There is indeed a fee adjustment. But the point is, first, the adjustment is meant to improve services. The government regulation on non-tax state revenue hadn't changed in 10 years," Minister Supratman told reporters on Monday, 20 July 2026 at the presidential palace complex in Jakarta.
The fee for foreign nationals applying for naturalization as Indonesian citizens will rise to 75 million rupiah from 50 million rupiah, while the fee for citizenship through marriage will increase to 25 million rupiah from 15 million rupiah.
Minister Supratman said the higher naturalization cost should not pose a problem for most applicants.
"The old fee was 50 million rupiah. The new fee is 75 million rupiah. And that's not an issue, because on average, people who want to become citizens, especially foreign nationals who have lived in Indonesia for five consecutive years or 10 non-consecutive years, tend to be people with greater financial means," he said.
Separately, the fee to renounce Indonesian citizenship directly through a presidential decree will rise to 5 million rupiah from 1 million rupiah, while a related decree fee for loss of citizenship will increase to 3.5 million rupiah from 500,000 rupiah. Minister Supratman said the change would affect a small pool of applicants.
"Because for something like an application to renounce citizenship, from 1 million rupiah to 5 million rupiah, the total number of applicants at the Ministry of Law right now is only around 200 or 300 people. So it's not a problem for the nation," he said, adding that most of applicants in that category also have sufficient financial means.
