Jayapura - An explosion destroyed several houses in a housing compound in Biak City District in Indonesia's Papua Province on Sunday, 31 May 2026 afternoon hours local time, has claimed five people lives and injured dozens others, while three other residents are reportedly missing.

According to Papua Police, it's likely that the explosion was from mortar or bomb left from the World War II. However, police and military have been investigating the cause of the explosion.

From the area where the explosion was occurred, anti-bomb squad team found several items that look like mortars or bombs from old version.

According to Papua Police Spokesperson Senior Commr. Police Cahyo Sukarnito, security personnel secured the place for searching missing individuals, conducting the investigation, and for safety reasons.

Remains of five victims have been transported to two hospitals - four to Biak Public Hospital and one to a Navy Hospital.***
