Bangkok - Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Monday, 11 May 2026 was released on parole from a prison in Bangkok after serving eight months behind bars due to a graft charge.

His family members and hundreds of his supporters greeted him in the front gate of the prison.

The 76-year old businessmen and politician has served as Thai Prime Minister since 2001 until 2006 when a military coup ousted him from the post when he was abroad.

After 15 years of self-exile, Thaksin returned to Thailand in 2023 to face eight years jail sentence for in a graft case. Later, the King commuted the sentence to one year.***
