Durian. Indonesian Military (TNI) Commander Air Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto on Apr.25 announced that all 53 Navy soldiers who were onboard submarine KRI Nanggala-402 that sunk in Bali Straits on Apr.21 have died while on duty as clear images spotted by search vessels using multi-beam sonar.
Clear images showing the body of the submarine wee chopped into several parts besides life jacket and others.
“From the proofs, it can be declared tat KRI Nanggala-402 has sunk and all of its crew [ and personnel onboard] have died. Therefore, with the deepest sadness , as the commander of TNI, I declared that 53 [Navy] personnel who were onboard KRI Nanggala-402 have died,” Tjahjanto said in a press conference at an Indonesia’s Air Force base in Bali.
KRI Nanggala-402 was built in West German and joined Indonesian Navy in 1981. There were 49 crews and 5 other Navy officials onboard the submarine when it went missing during torpedo launch drill on Apr.21 early morning at Bali Strait.
In the press conference, an orange life jacket that was found by rescuers was displayed to journalists as well as images of the wreaks of the submarine.
The government of Indonesia will coordinate with International Submarine Escape and Rescue Liaison Officer (ISMERLO) to evacuate the wreaks from the sea bed of about 850 meters depth.
