Durian. Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry on behalf of the government and the people has expressed condolences to the people of Lebanon regarding Beirut’s port blasts that claimed the life of dozens and hundreds other are wounded, including an Indonesian national.

 “The government of Indonesia conveys its deeply condolences and sympathy to families, the government and the people of Lebanon regarding blasts that occurred in Beirut port on August 4, causing fatalities,” the ministry said in a statement.

An Indonesian citizen has suffered light injured and has been discharged from Rafiq Hariri Hospital in Beirut after medical treatment, Indonesian embassy in Beirut said on August 4.

At least two major blasts have exploded at Port of Beirut, near downtown at 6.02 p.m. local time, the embassy said. At least 73 people have died and hundreds others are injured as well as infrastructure damage in a massive areas.

Search and rescue operation is ongoing to find those who are trapped under collapsed infrastructure debris.

The blasts were from a port’s storage that saving sodium nitrate which is normally used for food preservative, a combustible substance, according to an initial investigation.

“The Indonesian people are always with the Lebanese people in facing this difficult and sad situation,” the statement from the Foreign Ministry said.

Indonesia’s government in Lebanon will continue to monitor the latest development in Lebanon and to ensure the safety and security of the Indonesian nationals.

Based from the embassy’s data, there are 1,447 Indonesian citizens living in Lebanon. 1,234 of them are part of United Nations peacekeepers from Garuda Contingents, while 213 others are civilians.

“The Garuda contingent which is a member of UNIFIL FC is helping with post-explosion handling including evacuation of victims,” the ministry said.
