Jakarta - Indonesia’s House of Representatives on Friday, 19 June 2026 has received a set of demands from groups of university students who were rallied in front of the House building, criticizing a number of government's policies and programs.
A Deputy Speaker of the House Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, who directly met representatives of students, has pledged to forward the demands to the government as part of its oversight function.
Students' demands are including to stabilize national economy, stop national strategic programs that harm the people conditions, withdraw military from civil affairs, and cleaning government apparatus.
The Deputy House Speaker, who is a politician from the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) that is chaired by President Prabowo Subianto, has described the meeting with student activists as an open exchange between parliamentary leaders and representatives from several universities and student organizations.
“Today, the leadership of the House and the commissions received aspirations from students, including those who're from the HMI, the NPU, Trisakti (University), Mercu Buana (University), Esa Unggul (University), and several other campuses,” he noted, referring to the Islamic Student Association and Nusa Putra University.
The aspirations will be conveyed to the government, the politician added, in line with the House’s supervisory role.
“In essence, they submitted their aspirations to be forwarded to the government within the framework of our oversight duties,” he continued, adding that the discussion unfolded in a constructive atmosphere, with both sides engaging actively throughout the session.
Sufmi Dasco Ahmad is known as one of President Prabowo Subianto's close aids at Gerindra Party that is chaired by the president himself.
Friday's rally in front of the House of Representatives building in Jakarta was only one of similar rallies around the capital city. According to Jakarta Metropolitan Police, over 6,600 personnel from both police and military have been deployed to ensure public orders during those rallies on Friday.
