Search and rescue operation is ongoing to find possible survivors from Indonesian Navy’s missing submarine KRI Nanggala-402 after parts of the underwater vesselas well as its belongings such as support for torpedo, oil and cooler cord’s cover were found, and 72 hours of oxygen stocks has expired if it was black out.
Indonesian Military (TNI) Commander Air Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto said in a press conference from Bali Island on Apr.24, from those facts, especially after the expiry hour of oxygen since the vessel went missing, the institution declared that KRI Nanggala-402 was sinking.
KRI Nanggala-402 was lost contact on Apr.21 early morning, shortly after getting clearance to dive to 13 meter depth during torpedo launch drill in the waters northern part off Bali Island.
Most likely the submarine experienced cracks in its left side when moving down to the seabed, Navy Commander Admiral Yudo Margono said.
The submarine has oxygen stock for 72 hours if experiencing black out, otherwise the oxygen stock could be last for five days, Margono explained further.
The vessel detected in 850 meters depth, in the seabed which will be difficult and risky when lifting the object securely, the four-star general said. The location of KRI Nanggala-402 has moved 10 miles from its last position before diving, he added.
However, many are still hoping for miracle for survivors from total 53 people onboard KRI Naggala-402.
Indonesian Navy has been deploying 16 sea vessels and five flights for search and rescue operation. Indonesian National Police (Polri), Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) and the National Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla) also deploy their sea vessels to join the operation.
Some of assistance from foreign countries also have arrived in the search and rescue operation site from Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and the United States, while more assistance are expected to arrive later.
