Durian. Indonesian National Human Rights Commission’s (Komnas HAM) on Jan.8  announced  that there was ‘unlawful killing’ committed by police officers on Dec.7 towards four members of banned organization Islamic Defenders’ Front (FPI).

The event took place as the result of police’ surveillance over the movement of Rizieq Shihab, the leader of FPI who eluded police summons several times due to violation of health protocol of covid-19 pandemic. Shihab was guarded by dozen of his devoted guards whom tried to mislead police from the surveillance activities.

According to Komnas HAM investigation, there were grazing between cars rode by Shihab’s followers and police in the area around West Karawang, West Java to toll road Jakarta-Cikampek as well as attacks and shootings.

Two of Shihab’s followers were killed during those incidents and four others were captured alive by police, the commission said.

The four were killed when they’re at police hands, the investigation found.

‘’The four were alive on the hands of law enforcers, later were found have died, so the event was form of human rights violation; Shooting towards four people in one period of time without other efforts conducted to avoid more casualty is an indication of unlawful killing,’’ the commission stated in its report on Jan.8.

Therefore, Komnas HAM recommended the case to be carried to further law enforcement procedure through criminal justice.

Another significant recommendation out of four was to investigate the source of weapons owned by Shibab’s followers.

Police respect the investigation report and recommendations from Komnas HAM and will decide further measures when the institution has officially received it, National Police spokesperson Insp. Gen. Argo Yuwono said in Jakarta on Jan.8.
