Jakarta - Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on Friday, 26 June 2026 said a magnitude 6.8 earthquake has shaken southern Philippines and northern of Indonesia's North Sulawesi Province but no tsunami potential.
The center of the tremor was offshore in Mindanao, Philippines with 31 km depth at about 6.34 p.m. western Indonesia time, felt very strong in several locations in Indonesia, including Marore Islands and Sangihe Islands in North Sulawesi.
According to Director for Earthquake and Tsunami of the BMKG Wijayanto, based on the location of the epicenter and hypocenter of the magnitude 6.8 earthquke, it was tremor due to the activity of subduction of Philippine Sea plate.
"This earthquake is a series of aftershocks from the magnitude 7.7 in Mindanao, Philippines on 8 June 2026 at 6.37 a.m. western Indonesia time up to 26 June 2026 at 7 p.m, from the BMKG monitoring, there're 577 aftershocks with biggest magnitudo was 6.7," Dr. Wijayanto said.
