Paris - UNESCO Director General Khaled El-Enany on Friday, 10 July 2026 through a written statement has condemned the killing of Mexican Journalist Roxana Guzman Ramirez after one month from her abducted, and her country's authorities have arrested eight suspects.

Roxana was abducted from her residence in Nanchital, Veracruz on 2 June and her remains were found on 3 July when police after examining some bones, found in  Moloacán town, had confirmed the death of the journalist.

"I condemn the killing of Roxana Guzmán Ramirez. Journalists provide invaluable reporting on corruption, crime and other governance issues and  must be protected from all forms of attack. I call on the authorities to investigate this crime and bring its perpetrators to justice," Director Khaled El-Enany said.

Before her abduction, Roxana just about one year returned to Mexico and founded and led a media outlet Pulso Informativo del Sureste that's covering local issues. She left her home in Nanchital after her husband was killed in 2017.

From CCTV footages, police arrested eight suspects, including four police. From one of the suspect, police was led to the discover of human remains, which later confirmed belong to  Roxana Guzman Ramirez.

Reporters Without Border (RSF) said her death added the list of journalists killed in Veracruz in 2026 to three and become the fourth in Mexico.

"Three journalists killed in the sated of Veracruz in the first half of the year is unmistakable evidence of the collapse of the safeguards needed to practice journalism in the state," Director RSF Latin America Artur Romeu stated.***
