Jakarta - Iran's Experts Assembly on Sunday, 8 March 2026 evening announced that it has elected Mojtaba Khamenei, son of late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the country's new Supreme Leader, replacing his father who was killed in United States (US) and Israel joint military operation on 28 February.


Iranian Embassy in Indonesia confirmed on Monday, 9 March 2026  that the Expert Assembly or Majelis Khubregan has elected Mojtaba Khamenei as the supreme leader.


“Majelis Khubregan (the Assembly of Experts) of the Islamic Republic of Iran has elected Sayyed Mojtaba Khamenei as the new Supreme Leader of Iran, replacing his father who was martyred, Sayyed Ali Khamenei,” the embassy said in its social media post. 


The decision was taken through voting aimed to avoid vacuum of power, it said.

 Iranian media outlets said in US-Israel strikes, Mojtaba’s wife was also killed.


According to the embassy, about 1,200 people were killed since US and Israel launched their military attacks into Iran’s territory.


Iran launched counter-attack towards Israel's territory and also targeting US' military bases in neighboring countries, including in United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Jordan.***
