Jakarta - Indonesia's railway operator Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) recorded an increased of foreign tourists travel across Indonesia using trains to 2.54 percent in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year.
According to the state-owned company's data on Monday, 20 July 2026, there were 308,874 foreign tourists using long-distance trains across Indonesia from January to June 2026 compared to 301,219 in the same period in 2025.
About one third of foreign tourists, 106,474 individuals, have picked non-touristic train stations to depart and stop through 222 stations during their visit to Indonesia besides 10 popular-tourist preferential - Station Gambir, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Pasarsenen, Surabaya Gubeng, Semarang Tawang, Malang, Surabaya Pasar Turi, Cirebon, and Probolinggo.
Vice President Corporate Communication KAI Anne Purba said divers alternatives stations picked by foreign tourists show an indicator on positive development in many tourist destinations which attracted foreign visitors to Indonesia.
“Tourists start using more stations as their departure locations. This pattern is opening room for towns to promote their strength in cultural, culinary, history, nature as well as people daily life," the VP said on Monday, 20 July 2026.
KAI as the main railway operator in Indonesia has been managing 627 train stations and 7,765 km of active railway on Java and Sumatra Islands, while railway on Sulawesi Island is under construction process.
Safety, on time, cleanliness, comfortable facilities, easy access to book ticket, easy information deliverance are among factors that contributed to the increase of foreign tourist using trains in the first half of 2026, VP Anne said.
According to Indonesia's Statistic, in May 2026 alone, there were 1.38 million foreign tourists visited Indonesia.***
