Durian. Two trains – a commuter train and a distance train from Surabaya heading to Bandung – crashed near the Cicalengka Train Station in Bandung Regency on Friday, January 5, 2024, killing at least three people, officials said.
The accident between Bandung Commuter Train and Turangga Train was occured at 6.03am local time and caused several train scheduled are cancelled or changed its route-line.
“There are death victims inside train compartments… Data that we have received up to now is the same with the statement from Mr. Governor that is 28 are wounded and three people have died,” Senior Commissioner Police Ibrahim Tompo, West Java Police’s spokesperson told Kompas TV from the accident location in Cicalengka.
He explained further that there are train compartments sitting above others and it’s likely that some victims are still trapped inside.
What he could ensure there are two death victims trapped between train compartments. Evacuation process is ongoing to pull their bodies from the location.
At least 20 others are injured and are now having medical treatment, beside one casualty, according to an official from Cicalengka state-run hospital in an interview with Kompas TV.
The injured victims are also treated at nearby medical clinics besides Cicalengka Hospital, according to the police spokesperson.
According to Vice President of Indonesia’s Railways (KAI) Joni Martinus, when the accident took place 197 passengers were in the commuter line, while 287 others were in Turangga Train.
Ayep Hanapi, spokesperson of KAI’s Regional 2 Operations (Daops 2) said the route from eastern to western Java vis a vis through southern line must be changed to the northern line. He apologize on behalf of the KAI for the additional travel time for the customers due to the situation.
