Jakarta - Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a tsunami warning on Thursday, 2 April 2026 morning due to a magnitude 7.6 earthquake that occurred at North Maluku waters at 05.48am western Indonesia time or 07.48am eastern Indonesia time.

The center of the tremor was 129 km southeast of Bitung, in North Sulawesi with 33 km depth at sea.

"The earthquake has tsunami potential with an alert for Ternate City, Halmahera (Island), Tidore town, Bitung town, southern and northern part of Minahasa (North Sulawesi)," the agency said.

The cause of the earthquake was deformation activity if Earth's crust.***
