Jakarta - The US Embassy in Jakarta held a Mobile Journalism (MoJo) workshop on Friday, 13 March 2026 at the American Space located at Indonesia's grand mosque Istiqlal in Jakarta.

The half-day workshop brought together 31 participants, including journalists from the Association of Indonesia's Citizen Journalism (AJWI), members of the Indonesia's online media journalist association (IWO), and student from universities, mostly from journalism faculty and students' media representatives.

The workshop aimed to strengthen participants’ ability to produce compelling digital stories using smartphones, particularly in the context of Ramadan coverage.

As digital platforms continue to shape how stories are created and consumed, the training focused on helping emerging journalists report responsibly, creatively, and effectively on faith-related topics and community life during the holy month.

“The U.S. Embassy is committed to supporting professional journalism and engaging with emerging media communities, Through today’s workshop, we hope to provide practical tools that can support your work—whether it is learning how to frame compelling stories, conducting interviews that build strong narratives, or using mobile devices to capture video, photos, and audio effectively,” said the U.S. Embassy Spokesperson Jamie W. Ravetz in his opening remarks.

The program began with a session on Ramadan Storytelling in the Digital Age, which explored trends in digital Ramadan coverage and discussed responsible and sensitive reporting on faith-based topics.

Participants also learned interview techniques designed to help journalists build stronger narratives while maintaining journalistic ethics and accuracy. The second session focused on practical Mobile Journalism skills, including how to shoot high-quality video and photos using smartphones.

Trainers introduced key techniques such as framing, lighting, and audio basics, as well as simple mobile editing tools and workflows. Participants also learned how to produce engaging digital formats such as reels, shorts, and vertical videos suitable for social media platforms.

The workshop concluded with a practical exercise and pitch session, where participants developed short Ramadan story ideas and practiced producing quick video content related to the workshop activities. Selected participants then presented their stories and received feedback from the trainers.
