Geneva - Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Sunday, 22 March 2026 informed that a deadly attack against Al-Deain Teaching Hospital in Sudan has caused at least 64 people were killed and 98 other wounded.

"WHO has verified yet another attack on health care in Sudan. This time, Al-Deain Teaching Hospital in East Darfur’s capital. Al-Deain, was struck, killing at least 64 people, including 13 children, two female nurses, one male doctor, and multiple patients," Ghebreyesus said.

The latest attack took place on Friday, 20 March 2026, and its is a tragedy for the people of Sudan. During the country's  three-year conflicts, health facilities several times were targeted.

"Over the nearly three-year conflict, WHO has confirmed that 2,036 people have been killed in 213 attacks on health care, including Friday night’s strike in Al-Deain, he said.

Health Ministry of Peace Government of Sudan in its statement said the attack was conducted by Muslim Brotherhood's army using a drone.

"A military drone belong to the terrorist army targeted Al-Deain Teaching Hospital with three missiles, striking the pediatric ward, maternity ward, and emergency cases across all medical specialities," the ministry said.

Besides killing 64 people, the attack caused 98 other injured, it said.

The casualties is likely to rise as rescue operations and retrieval bodies under debris were ongoing on Sunday, 22 March 2026. Health Ministry said the hospital is now out of service due to the destruction caused by the attack.

The ministry also informed that Muslim Brotherhood also attacked a market in El Faster using drone, killing 23 and wounding 35 others. Those wounded are treated at Saudi Hospital in the city, it said.
