London - The British Transport Police on Saturday, 20 June 2026 in a press conference detailed the collision incident on Friday evening in Belford, causing a driver from the two transport vehicles has died.

"At around 5.15pm last night we were called to reports of a collision between two East Midlands trains close to Elstow, Bedford. Tragically, the driver of one of the trains died in the collision," Chief of Constable Lucy D'Orsi of teh British Transport Police said.

The driver was from East Midlands Railway.

"Over 80 people were treated at hospital last night.  As of this morning 28 remain in hospital and nine are in a critical condition.  I’d like to thank the ambulance service and NHS for their response," she said.

Specialist investigators from British Transport Police have been investigating the cause of the fatal incident, she said.

She explained coordination among various parties - the Fire and Rescue and Ambulance services, Bedfordshire Police, the National Police Air Service,  Network Rail and East Midlands Railway - along with peoe from local communities near Imanaged to overcome emergency situation.***
