North Halmahera - Indonesian Search and Rescue (SAR) team move faster to evacuate 20 climbers, including nine Singaporean on Friday, 8 May 2026.
The volcano spew a column of ashes more than 10,000 meter high from its top on Friday morning eastern Indonesia's time zone around 8am.
According to North Halmahera Regency's Disaster Mitigation Unit (BPBD), Head of Mamuya Village where the mountain is located informed the unit that at least five climbers are wounded due to the eruption.
"There are 20 climbers, nine of them are foreigners and the rest are locals from North Maluku," Chief North Halmahera Police Adjunct Senior Police Commissioner Erlichson Pasaribu told CNN Indonesia TV on Friday.
He said rescuers face difficulties to evacuate climbers from the mountain as the eruption is ongoing
"There are three victims, two of them have died and one is still missing," he said citing the data from the North Halmahera BPBD.
