Jakarta - Megawati Soekarnoputri, the 5th president of Indonesia, congratulated Iranian people for having their new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, who was elected on Sunday, 9 March 2026, as well as to the leader himself, Iranian Embassy Jakarta said on Tuesday, 10 March 2026.

Megawati sent her congratulatory message to Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khemenei in a letter through the country's Ambassador to Indonesia Mohammad Boroujerdi.

"In the meeting, Madame Megawati conveyed a congratulatory letter to Ayatollah Sayyed Mojtaba Khamenei for his election as the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran," the Embassy said in a social media statement and video.

The meeting was held at Megawati's residence in Central Jakarta.

"Moreover, she gave gifts of photos of her with late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei when she visited Iran in 2004 to Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran," the statement concluded.

Megawati Soekarnoputri who is also leading Indonesia's largest political party having majority seats in the House of Representatives (DPR), the Indonesia's Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP). The party confirmed the meeting.

Previously, Megawati has conveyed condolences message to the death of the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during the United States (US) and Israel's attack against Iran on 28 February 2026.

Indonesian government has yet conveyed its official condolences on it.***
