Jakarta - Indonesia has stopped giving basic military trainings far candidate managers to the government-set cooperatives, Red-White Village and Urban Village Cooperative (KDKMP) and Red-White Fishermen Village (KNMP), following the death of five trainees, a Defense Ministry's official said on Tuesday, 20 June 2026.

The death of the five trainees in various military education facilities across the country has pulled demands from various parties, calling the government to stop the military-style drills.

As a follow up, Indonesian Defense Ministry on Saturday, 28 June 2026 has announced publicly that it would fully evaluate the program that's part of so-called the Scholars Driving Indonesia's Development Program (SPPI).

 "Initial format of the activity that previously known as basic military training (Latsarmil) has been evaluated and is not implemented in that form anymore. This time, the activity is adjusted, becoming state defense and managerial training," Defense Ministry Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Rico Strait told the Asia Globe on Tuesday, 30 June 2026.

He explained that the new form of training for about 30,000 candidate cooperative managers would focus on character building, discipline, leadership, national vision, cooperation, and management.

As of military-style training is strip from the training subjects and the participants of the program only will do morning exercise to maintain healthy body and mind.

According to Brig.Gen. Strait, morning exercise will also adjust each participant health condition. 

"In principle, safety and health of the participants as the main priority," the spokesperson underlined, adding the new format of the training has been officially imposed on Saturday, 28 June 2026.****
