Jakarta - An Indonesian human right defender for the the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (Kontras) Andrie Yunus was hit by unidentified men, throwing strong acid against him from a two-wheel drive on Thursday, 12 March 2026 evening.
According to Kontras, its Deputy Coordinator Andrie Yunus has been suffering serious injured, particularly on his both hands, chest, eyes, and face due to the strong chemical liquid.
"The incident took place after Andri Yunus recorded a podcast at the Indonesia's Legal Aid Foundation's (YLBHI) office, theming "Remilitarism And Judicial Review in Indonesia" that was completing around 23.00 western Indonesia's time," Kontras said in its written statement on Friday, 13 March 2026.
The human right defender was taken to a hospital and suffers 24 percent burn injured.
The chronology of the incident from Kontras shows two unidentified men in a two-wheel drive came from opposite direction threw something against Andri Yunus who was driving his motorbike.
"The victim screamed painfully and let his motorcycle down. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital un Jakarta," Coordinator Kontras Dimas Bagus Arya explained.
Kontras believes that the incident against its activist is a real action to shut critical voices from the society, especially from human rights defenders.
Kontras calls Indonesia Police to investigate the incident to uncover the motif behind the attack and find the perpetrators to be brought before justice.
"Considering trowing strong acid liquid against the victim that causes fatal wounded and possible death, therefore, the perpetrators must get heavy punishment for a murder trial (case)," Dimas stressed.***
