Jakarta - Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said on Thursday, 2 April 2026 that small-scale tsunami below one meter happened in several locations post a magnitude 7.6 earthquake and at least one people died hit by part of collapsed building, according to the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas).
BMKG issued tsunami warning since 5.48am western Indonesia time zone and lifted it at 10.19am western Indonesia time zone.
Several houses and buildings, including the Indonesia's National Sports Committee (KONI) building, in Manado, North Sulawesi collapsed, according to Basarnas.
Nuriadin Gumelang, spokesperson for Search and Rescue (SAR) Office in Manado, North Sulawesi said a 70-year old woman died, hit by collapsed buildin. He said there are reports about people jumped from high-rise buildings due to panic, but the information need to be verified.
Meanwhile, BMKG said, tsunami occurred in several locations with below one meter-high.
It said below one-meter tsunami were recorded in West Halmahera on Halmahera Island in North Maluku at 0.3 meter, in Bitung Island in North Sulawesi at 0.2 meter, Sidongoli on Ternate Island in North Maluku at 0.35 meter, in North Minahasa in North Sulawesi at 0.75 meter and in Belang, Southeast Minahasa in North Sulawesi at 0.68 meter.
So far no report from other affected areas of the powerful tremor. ***
