Jakarta - A spokesperson for Freeport Indonesia, an affiliated company of US-based metal company Freeport McMoran, said on Wednesday, 11 March 2026, that gunmen have opened fires at its Grasberg Opened Mine, causing one employee died.

Grasberg mine is located in Indonesia's Central Papua Province, produces copper and gold.

"Freeport Indonesia confirms there were shootings committed by unidentified men on Wednesday, 11 March 2026 around 8.30am eastern Indonesia time at Grasberg opened mine area," the company Spokesperson Katri Krisnati told Asiaglobe.news. 

She confirmed that one employee Simson Mulia, 48, was killed in that incident, conveying condolences to the family of the deceased.

Freeport Indonesia has been in contact with state security apparatus for further investigation and to find the responsible party of the incident.

Indonesian government owns 51 percent shares of Freeport Indonesia through state-owned mining holding company MIND ID.

In February 2026, Indonesian government stated it will take over additional 12 percent of shares from Freeport McMoran by 2041 and the deal was sealed in Washington DC.***
