Geneva- United Nations' Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) Mary Lawlor expressed concern about a recent attack on an Indonesian human activist using strong acid by unidentified individuals.

At that stage, Lawlor urged Indonesia's government under President Prabowo Subianto's administration to carry out a thorough investigation into the incident of a strong acid attack against Andrie Yunus, deputy coordinator of the Commission for the Disappeared & Victims of Violence (Kontras) on Thursday, 12 March 2026 evening Indonesian time.

"I call on the Indonesian authorities to carry out thorough investigations into this horrific attack. Impunity for violence against HRDs is unacceptable," Mary Lawlor said on her social media account X.

In her comment on the condemned incident on Friday, 13 March 2026, Lawlor tagged mentioned Indonesia's Permanent Mission to the UN, and Foreign Ministry.

Kontras Coordinator Dimas Bagus Arya explained that Andrie had been splashed by hazardous chemical liquid by two unknown subjects while riding a two-wheel drive from the opposite direction.

The human rights defender is suffering serious injured from the attack that could harm his life. Kontras and Indonesian civil society groups on Friday called for comprehensive investigation by police to find the perpetrators, uncover the motive behind the attack, and prevail justice to the victim.

According to Kontras and other Indonesian civil society groups, Andrie's human rights investigations  mostly related with Papua and military issues.***
